Selling energy under your own brand: how does it work?

What reselling energy involves, who the supplier is, and what you as an organisation do and do not have to arrange yourself.

Selling energy sounds like something for large utilities. Yet more and more organisations offer electricity and gas under their own name: an association to its members, an installer to its customers, a retailer to its cardholders. That is possible thanks to a white-label arrangement.

What is an energy brand?

An energy brand (in Belgium often called an “energy label”) is a brand under which energy contracts are offered. The brand is yours; the supply is handled by a licensed energy supplier in the background. The customer experiences your brand, from sign-up to invoice.

Do you need a licence?

Supplying energy is regulated in Belgium: a supplier needs a supply licence and must be connected to the market processes with the grid operators. In a white-label arrangement, the supplier behind the brand carries those obligations. You do not have to apply for a licence yourself and you take no sourcing position.

Who does what?

  • You: brand, target group, sales and the relationship with your customers, as their first point of contact.
  • The supplier: sourcing, market communication, billing, collection, reporting and the support of your customer service.
  • Together: the offer, the price structure and the communication to the customer.

Why organisations do this

  • A recurring source of income alongside the core business.
  • More touchpoints with customers or members.
  • A natural addition to products such as solar panels, charging points or energy management.
  • An offer that matches the values of your own community.

What to look for when choosing a partner

  • Transparency: can you explain the price structure to your customers?
  • Insight: do you see your own contracts, invoices and earnings, in real time?
  • Customer service: how does the supplier support your team when your customers have questions?
  • Earnings: how and when are you paid, and what happens in case of non-payment?
  • House style: how far does the brand carry through in portals, emails and invoices?

Energy Together was built around exactly those questions. See how the platform works, or get in touch for an exploratory conversation.
